Alright, some of you know some things about my car, others do not, and then there are those who don't care because everyone says DSM or bust. Well I have a members ride thread, but i have mainly been doing things to make the car look better. Well now I am stepping up the game and now the project begins. So I will include pictures of my car, current setup, numbers, current dyno, and then videos of cars with the same motor I am installing and once its done, I will have the new dyno done and will compare. My expected numbers are between 220-230 whp and 240-250 ft lbs of torque. Not bad for n/a v6. Eclipses like mine typically run the 1/4 in mid 15's or so. My goal is to reach into the 13's, even if its 13.99. On to the goodness.

Current Performance Setup
-3.0L 6g72 24 Valve SOHC v6 motor rated 205/200
-4 Speed Automatic with Sportronic Shifting
-KYB-AGX 4-way gas adjustable struts
-Eibach Pro-kit Springs
-22mm Suspension Techniques Rear Sway Bar with Urethane Bushings
-Powerslot Slotted Rotors with Ceramic Pads
-AEM Cold Air Intake
-Invidia 2.75" Stainless Steel Cat-Back Exhaust

Current Dyno: 170.9 whp/166.7 ft.lbs. of torque
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/27f00427-4d70-4b27-99e0-d63acd3400ff.htm

Planned Setup
-3.5L 6g74 24 Valve SOHC v6
-Racing Performance Works Stage 1 252/252 Cams
-Racing Performance Works Street Series Short Tube Headers
-Ingalls Engine Dampner
-Prothane Motor Mounts Inserts
-NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs (3764)
-Accel Plug Wires 8mm V6 (#7922*)
-Rezlo Street Series Torque Converter
-B&M Tranny Cooler
-full EvoScan ECU reflash dyno tuned

As I purchase things, I will edit this post and change the color to red.

Videos of the motor installed:

This is 1/4 Mile. Grey Eclipse has the 3.5L Swap, intake, exhaust, and its auto. The red Eclipse Has Intake, Headers, Exhaust, Tune, Suspension and 5 speed. You can see the difference the motor makes. I can only imagine after cams, headers, and a good solid tune. The video against the Silver Eclipse...the Silver one has the same setup.

Current Status
2/22-Motor has been purchased and paid for and will be delivered Tuesday morning to a place about 10 minutes from my dad's work in Roanoke. My dad and my brother are going to pick it up Tuesday and storing it in my brother's garage until I get all my other parts in.

2/29-Motor is at home in heated garage. Ordered prothane motor mounts and ngk iridium spark plugs. Next purchase will be the Accel Spark Plug Wires, hopefully next week.

Its gonna be good man. I haven't ever really seen many 3g eclipses around here that are that fast. I think a 5 speed would help you get into the 13s alot easier. But that would most likely be a hard swap. I would also invest in some lightweight wheels.

Damn cool to see someone modding the shit out of a 3g. Can't wait for it to get done.

Thanks guys, I am really looking forward to it. As for the transmission, I think 2400 stall will be sufficient, plus the drive axles in the manual transmission are much weaker, so alot of people have had problems with the axles snapping. No one has really stepped up and made some custom racing axles for this car yet. The automatic ones are MUCH stronger. Especially if I am going to be throwing that much of an increase in torque at them. So with the 2400 stall, upgraded motor mounts and ingalls engine mount, I think I will be golden. As for light weight wheels...I plan on eventually getting me a used set of Evo VIII wheels with a nice set of meats to put on there for when I go to the track.

For those who are wondering, this motor is a DIRECT bolt-in swap, everything on the motor works with the setup I have now, and for the things that don't, the parts swap directly from my motor onto the new motor.

Cool. The ingalls mount is probably one my favorite mods done to my car. Just it feels so much more torquey and it feels like its delivering more power to the road.

Well a little update fellas...instead of biding on the motor, I checked car-part.com and found one in Lynchburg VA with 44k miles on it for $640 picked up...really good deal. I think I am going to do that instead of worrying about shipping and all that. More than likely going to pick it up saturday :)

Also, the guy who is doing my install and tune for me has a set of RPW Long Tube Headers ceramic coated black with HFC and 02 bungs placed properly and he is holding them for me for when I take my car to him. These are specifically designed for the bigger motor. :headbang:

Nice update fellas...called the place with the motor, they sold the one with 44k miles on it, but had one with 67k and they are throwing in a 3 month warranty and delivering it to Roanoke for $650 :). called today and placed the order and the motor is now mine. It will be here Tuesday. It finally begins.

won't fit, the dohc block is too big to fit into my engine bay. Trust me, everyone has posted so many damn threads on possible different motor swaps. The 74 is the only feasible one along with the EVO swap into the 4 cylinder 3g's. I am happy with what I have planned...my car is a DD and will be perfect for what I want.

Well I certainly hope so. Can't wait to get it started. They dropped the price on the Quaife LSD's, so I may go ahead and pick that up when I order all my stuff :)

Maximuscr31
02-23-2008, 11:27 PM
Nice. I wish they still made KAZZ lsd's for the center diff in awd cars :( I am probably gonna get a quaife front lsd for mine eventually and try to track down one of the old skool kazz center diffs.

K.J.
02-24-2008, 12:20 PM
That's wierd...why did they stop making it? Well hopefully you can get your hands on one. Does everyone recommend a LSD? its $1,050 for it but I just want to make sure its worth the upgrade on a FWD car before I do so.

Maximuscr31
02-24-2008, 11:19 PM
Yes. The quaife or kazz are excellent in fwd applications. Just stay away from the quaife for the center diff in any tsi/gsx

K.J.
02-25-2008, 09:13 PM
how come?? Maxi, I know this may sound like a stupid question, but you seem like you have alot of knowledge on how things work...what kind of benefits will the LSD offer me with my setup? I know its for traction purposes and such, but how so?

02-25-2008, 09:36 PM
Two wheels spinning instead of one?

TiAgZ4Mc
02-25-2008, 09:39 PM
Yea, better power transfer, you can get some torque steer going on out of the corners and do burnouts with both wheels. My si has one, I like it.

K.J.
02-26-2008, 08:43 AM
ok good, thats what I figured it was for, but I wasn't a hundred percent sure. I figured it worked like a posi-traction on old muscle cars.

now for my next line of questions.

I will be upgrading to new tires soon because I have an 8.5" wheel with a 225 series tire, you can tell the tire is stretched, so I want to move up to a 235/40/18. I really LOVE the KDW2 tires, I think they are great tires. But my car is a daily driver...so do you guys recommend that tire or a different tire? I want one with an aggressive tread pattern, one with EXCELLENT traction but one I can still drive in rain. I don't drive like an idiot though, especially in rain. Any recommendations would be great.

uno
02-26-2008, 09:11 AM
iirc and i could be wrong because i dont keep up with tires, but doesn't the W in the KDW2 stand for Water or Wet ?

on the engine swap, i think it's going to be good man. I like that you are doing something different. hopefully it will be what you want it to be. if not, you can always add some spray to it :) good luck man!

K.J.
02-26-2008, 09:35 AM
well my next planned upgrade after I get the motor good and done, is down the road after im used to it and know its limits, I plan to change to a 5 speed and then after that probably some boost after I get me a second car. I have to get out of college next spring and move back home then I can start getting into the nitty gritty.

As for the tires I looked them up, they are good in everything but snow. Which is good for me. I LOVE the tread pattern on them, they look so aggressive.

Just made a new purchase today guys.

I got my prothane motor mounts and NGK Iridium spark plugs. Next thing to get is the Accel Spark Plug Wires.

BTW, I never posted, my engine is at home and safe at my parents house. I also added something to the list of planned mods. I am looking into ordering CP forged pistons 94mm overbored that comes with the wrist pins and rings set to match the overbore. So this car will be ready for down the road if I get the itch for boost. Basically its going to be like a brand new motor going in the car :)

The kdw2 are awesome tires. Came stock on our old srt4. Great traction in everything. Car was garaged so we never tried it in the snow. Only once or twice in rain. Yes, the "W" stands for wet and the times it was in rain it never had a problem unless you were WOT. The tread is awesome looking. Also, they have a little bit of noticeable road noise, sort of like a hum.

I may be getting better results than I had initially planned. Overbore with CP pistons, stage 1 cams and adjustable cam gears, headers, exhaust, intake, some good traction mods (engine stiffy, motor mounts, wider tires), and a full tune..should yield some helluva good results for an N/a car. :gears:

Sorry I didn't get back to you man. I missed this thread somehow. Anyways year a real lsd like a kazz or quaife is awesome. Can't really go wrong with either in a fwd application. Basically it transfers power away from the wheel that is spinning to the one that has grip. If both lose traction, then the power is split evenly. It will help at the drag strip some, and help even more in a autox/turning situation since the wheels turn at different speeds. Alot of times your innner wheel will spin first, and the kazz or quaife will transfer power to the outer wheel allowing you to pull through the corner quicker and get on it earlier. The main difference between the two is a kazz is a clutch type and the quaife is a ATB type diff and uses gears/fluids to engage. Either/or will honestly do you fine. The kazz won't wear out quickly and the quaife won't ever wear out. Quaife offer a lifetime warranty on all their diffs except the 90-99 eclipse center diffs. They break do to a design flaw in the original center diff design. 3rd gear is driven off the diff and puts too much load on it causing uneven power split between the front/rear if it wheel hops or is used in hard autox. Dennis Grant used to have his quaifr center diff rebuilt every 7-10 races otherwise it would break on the course. This isn't a fwd diff problem or any other make so don't worry. Its why Kazz doesn't even bother.

Also what compression ratio you going with?

K.J.
03-01-2008, 07:53 AM
Awesome, thanks for the info! Makes perfect sense. Kazz don't make one for my car, the only one made is the Quaife.

As for compression ratio, the ones I am getting are 8.8:1. That way if in a year or so I get the itch, I can slap on a turbo and boost the hell out of it and get some nasty results. 3.5L + forged pistons + boost=one nasty ride.

Here is a link so you can check them out.

Maximuscr31
03-01-2008, 08:26 AM
Nice man. 8.8:1 is the same compression I am running

K.J.
03-01-2008, 08:43 AM
Yep my stock motor now is running 10:1 CR, a definate no-no for boost. It doesn't help that the stock pistons are COMPLETE shit too. Oh well, I will have a nice setup on my hands :)

Maximuscr31
03-01-2008, 08:57 AM
whats the stock compression on the 3.5 motor?

K.J.
03-01-2008, 09:34 AM
Actually now that I think about it...my motor now is 11:1 and the stock gt motor is 10:1, and the 3.5 is the same as the gt motor...10:1.

Maximuscr31
03-01-2008, 09:36 AM
That won't be a big difference then till you boost it. Nice!

K.J.
03-01-2008, 09:38 AM
Let me search to make sure...I am not 100%.

K.J.
03-01-2008, 11:26 AM
ok did some searching, and after I bore it out and drop in the new pistons, that it will be a 3.6L :gears:

K.J.
03-06-2008, 07:39 AM
ok i made some changes. Did some more research on the motor, and the only pistons that are made are much lower compression ones and that it will hinder my performance unless I go with boost...which I can not afford for atleast a couple years. So I was told to stick with the 10:1 stock pistons and then just get all new bearings, gaskets, fluids, etc. and refreshen it. But, one thing I am changing, is instead of getting stage 1 cams...I am going to get the stage 2 cams with upgaded valve springs and adjustable cam gears. A guy on club3g.com has the stage 2 on the motor that is in my car now and dynoed 223 whp and 195 ft lbs of torque. So imagine on a motor with larger displacement and about 40 more ft lbs of torque stock. Its going to be a monster!!

Here is a video of a turbo 3g with the stage 2 cams so you can hear the idle on it. God it sounds orgasmic. I can't imagine after I have refreshed 3.5L and long tube headers pushing it. :gears:

There is nothing wrong with turbo, but for a daily driver and a car definately not meant for boost, its out of the question for me, atleast anytime soon.

Ok so the prothane motor mounts and iridium plugs arrived. Those motor mounts are so nice. Also I went home this weekend and removed the diamante intake manifold and throttle body and posted it for sale on club3g (I am retaining the stock GTS mani and tb) and with the money, im placing the order for 8.5mm plug wires and ingalls engine dampner. Also this past week, I put a hault on buying performance parts for a moment and I finally got fed up of driving in the car for 4 years with a shredded drivers side seat, so I won these on ebay

http://i2.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/cd/7d/7c42_1.JPG

All black leather out of a spyder. Front and rear with side impact air bags and drivers seat is electric. Won the set for $444 shipped. Supposed to be here this week. can't wait to be cruisin in style. I HATED the factory cloth.

ok been doin alot of thinking and talking, so i've decided im doing priorities first.

Instead of spending the money to fix the body, im gonna go ahead and order the rest of the parts I need to swap the 3.5L in (headers, cams, torque converter, all odds and ends, etc). Instead of having it sent to Maryland, im gonna save myself a bunch of money and me, my brother, and my dad are gonna do it in my brother's garage. I am tired of running just an intake and catback. I actually want to run at street fights this summer, so i am ready to get this damn thing running good. I already have the spark plugs and motor mounts, just need to get a few more odds and ends and it should be ready. Just thought i would update.

Driving around with 3.5L, cams, torque converter, and full exhaust > fixing body damage
